Honestly, at first, I was kind of against the movie, as I am a fan of Jeff Buckley first before I am of Penn Badgley (is it just me or their name rhymed?). I really think the fact that Jeff was against any kind of movie about him is because who he was, that will be gone, some things will be exaggerated for the sake of movie making cinema. But I went to see it anyway because I am a sucker for Penn and his interviews actually convince me maybe it will be okay.
So I did and it was… not what I expected. In a good way. I expected something like Ray, where all the extreme points in his life were pointed out in the movie when really, that was not his life, he has more of it, more of Ray Charles, not just what they portrayed in the movie. So even if Jamie Foxx was excellent, I think they can’t portray enough of Ray Charles to do him justice.
Greetings was, as if they have no plot or directions in it. Greetings was in fact, something that Jeff was, a person who roams and gets inspired by things. That was me watching the movie, I got inspired. I don’t know what, but I felt like I want to take a walk and just feel the life ahead, do something, make something, anything. Its hard to feel that way. I don’t know Jeff Buckley personally, I mean he died when I was born, but his music will always haunt me. I read about him, his interviews, what people say about him, and he was never this mysterious guy, he was this very talented guy who knows what he’s doing when he plays the guitar and perform.
I was glad Penn got the role, as he nailed it. I almost see him as Jeff when he performs it is mindboggling. Penn is like Jeff’s ghost. He was Jeff without trying to imitate him, without trying to be him. Penn just puts himself in Jeff’s place, and gives a very haunting and excellent performance.
The movie was only a few days of Jeff’s life before he shot to stardom, but it captured Jeff perfectly. Its Jeff, everywhere, from the actor’s presence to the movie’s roaming, its Jeff. Its not a typical biopic, but I guess that is a good factor, because you can’t tell a life story in 2 hours, but you can tell about the person on a few day’s tell all. Fictitious or not, its not about the facts, its about the soul of Jeff. And to me, they got pretty perfect.
I loved it. I think Jeff would to.
